DIAGNOSTIC DESCRIPTION
Perennial herb 0.05–0.4(–0.8) m, tall, erect or suberect to decumbent, with stems few to rather numerous, caespitose and/or ± spreading, sometimes branching at or near base and then sometimes rooting, otherwise very rarely branched below inflorescence until after fruiting. Stems terete or sometimes partly to wholly narrowly 2-lined, eglandular; internodes 3–30 mm, shorter than to exceeding leaves. Leaves sessile or very rarely subsessile, spreading or rarely ascending; lamina 5–40 × (0.5–)1–9(–11) mm, linear to narrowly oblong or lanceolate-oblong; paler to glaucous beneath, chartaceous; apex rounded, margin plane to revolute, base subamplexicaul to rounded or rarely cuneate; venation: 3–4 pairs of main lateral veins from lower ½–3/5 of midrib, with tertiary reticulation lax to obscure; laminar glands absent or rarely few, pale and scattered or black and distal; inframarginal glands black, rather dense. Inflorescence 1–c. 35-flowered, from 1–4 nodes, without flowering branches below, the whole cylindric to broadly pyramidal or subcorymbiform; bracts and bracteoles narrowly lanceolate to linear, entire to ± black-glandular-ciliate. Flowers (7–)10–18 mm in diam.; buds ellipsoid, rounded. Sepals 5, equal to unequal, basally united, (2–)3–5 × 0.8–1.5 mm, lanceolate to ovate or narrowly to broadly oblong, acute to obtuse, glandular-denticulate to -ciliate or -fimbriate (rarely absent in Iberia); veins 3–5, unbranched; laminar glands linear to punctiform, pale and (mostly or distally) black; marginal glands black, on denticuli or cilia or fimbriae, regular. Petals 5, bright yellow, usually tinged red, 7– 10(–12) × 2.5–3.5 mm, 1.5–2.5 × sepals, elliptic to oblanceolate, rounded; laminar glands pale or black, striiform to punctiform; marginal glands black, immersed to ± prominent. Stamens 40–50, longest 5–8 mm, c. 0.8 × petals. Ovary 2–3 × 1–1.5 mm, narrowly ovoid; styles 3.5–5 mm, 1.5–2 × ovary. Capsule (2–)6–8.5(– 10) × 3-5 mm, c. 2 × sepals, ovoid-cylindric; valves with numerous narrow vittae sometimes interrupted and/ or bearing small swellings. Seeds mid-brown, 0.6–0.7 mm; testa densely linear-foveolate.
