Graveolentia (Nomenclature)
From sect. 9. Hypericum it differs in having mature stem internodes very often terete below, eglandular or with glands not limited to raised lines, sepals with laminar glands linear to striiform (or very rarely punctiform), anther glands occasionally amber, capsule vittae linear or very rarely pale- or black-vesiculose. Type: H. graveolens Buckley.
Stem internodes 2–4-lined and sometimes ancipitous above, nearly always terete below [± persistently 2-lined and ancipitous in 2b. H. oaxacanum subsp. oaxacanum], eglandular or with black gland-dots or -streaks (i) on or beside subfoliar lines or, (ii) in some terete stems, in 2 subfoliar ranks and (iii) sometimes elsewhere. Leaves with laminar glands all pale to all black, dense to very sparse but never wholly absent. Inflorescence 1–70(–124)-flowered, with branching dichasial to monochasial from 1–4 nodes, sometimes with subsidiary branches from up to 12 nodes below; bracts and bracteoles entire to basally glandular-denticulate, never foliar. Flowers stellate, homostylous. Sepals 5, free, persistent, erect in fruit, with margin entire or with ± prominent glands or glandular-ciliate proximally and occasionally distally; veins (3)5–7; laminar glands all pale to rarely all black, linear to striiform or rarely punctiform; marginal glands absent to few or more rarely numerous, black. Petals 5, persistent, spreading, erect but not or scarcely twisting after flowering, without apiculus, margin entire to subentire or rarely sparsely glandular-denticulate; laminar glands all pale to all black, linear to punctiform; marginal glands immersed to prominent or absent. Stamen fascicles 5, united 2 + 2 + 1 (i.e. ‘3’), persistent, with stamens totalling 16–90, filaments basally united; anther gland amber or usually black; pollen type X, except 4. H. epigeium with type IV (see Robson, 1981, p. 117). Ovary with 3(4) completely axile placentae, each -ovulate; styles 3(4), free, divergent from discrete bases; stigma narrow to narrowly capitate. Capsule 3(4)-valved, chartaceous, with valves longitudinally vittate or occasionally with slightly diagonal, sometimes slightly swollen vittae or scattered elongate to ovoid vesicles, the vittae pale, vesicles sometimes black. Seeds linear-reticulate to reticulate-scalariform.
