DIAGNOSTIC DESCRIPTION
Wiry perennial herb 0.13–0.3 m tall, erect to ascending, sometimes branched above or rarely from most of nodes, sometimes “making loose mats several feet across”. Stems 4-lined and ancipitous above, sharply 2-lined below. Leaf lamina 10–35 × 4–10 mm, ± broadly to narrowly elliptic or lanceolate; laminar glands always pale. Inflorescence from 1–2 nodes, occasionally with branches from up to 2 nodes below; bracts reduced-foliar or lanceolate. Flowers red-tinged in bud. Sepals entire or sparsely glandular-denticulate to -ciliate; veins 5; laminar glands always pale. Petals with laminar glands always pale; marginal glands few or absent. Capsule 6–7 mm long.
