DIAGNOSTIC DESCRIPTION
Differs from var. elongatum as follows: Inflorescence sometimes more broadly cylindric or narrow and more elongate (up to 12 nodes). Sepals all irregularly or regularly gland-fringed, with margin otherwise entire or minutely denticulate.
Perennial herb, 0.5–0.6 m tall, glabrous, erect, branching from upper or all nodes, with sterile shoots ascending. Stems not glaucous, sparsely amber-gland-dotted, not prominent; internodes 12–30mm, exceeding leaves. Leaves sessile, spreading to erect, not glaucous; lamina (main stem) 13–20 ×1.5–3 mm, linear, apex acute to obtuse, margin recurved to revolute, base broadly cuneate to rounded, 1-veined or with 1–3 pairs of lateral branches, with laminar glands pale, small, numerous, marginal glands pale, irregular or absent; lamina (axillary and sterile shoots) smaller, narrower, apex acute to apiculate. Inflorescence ∞-flowered, from 9–12 nodes, narrowly or rather broadly cylindric to elongate-cylindric, lax, 120–600 mm long, with lateral cymules 1–3-flowered, without or with up to 3 flowering branches below; bracts and bracteoles triangular-lanceolate, entire, without black glands. Flowers 15–30 mm in diam., with petals erect after flowering; buds broadly ellipsoid to globose. Sepals unequal, free, imbricate, 2.5–4 × 1.2–3 mm, broadly ovate to oblong, subacute to obtuse; veins 5, becoming slightly prominent; all with regular or irregular sessile or (basally) stalked elliptic marginal glands; laminar glands pale, linear and punctiform. Petals golden to rather pale yellow, not red-tinged, 10–16 × 5–8 mm, c. 4 × sepals, obovate to oblanceolate, unguiculate, rounded, distally or all round black-glandular-ciliate; laminar glands pale, punctiform to shortly striiform. Stamens c. 60, longest 8–10 mm; filaments not red-tinged. Ovary c. 4 × 2 mm, narrowly ovoid-pyramidal; styles 4–4.5 mm, about as long as ovary. Capsule (immature) ovoid-pyramidal. Seeds not seen.
