Hypericum capitatum var. capitatum (Nomenclature)
Diagnostic description:
Sepals dark red. Petals, stamen filaments and styles orange- to blood-red or crimson. Stems up to c. 0.35 m tall, usually shorter.
Distribution:
Syria, Turkey (Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır).
Notes:
Red anthocyanin, which appears frequently in Hypericum petals as a tinge or veining, in this variety permeates the whole sepal and petal and the filaments, colouring them orange-red to crimson. The only other known example of this phenomenon in Hypericum is in most plants of H. albiflorum (Sect. 12. Origanifolia), where the base colour of the petal is white, not yellow, and the effect of the suffusion is pink, not red.
