DIAGNOSTIC DESCRIPTION
Subshrub or perennial herb 0.15-0.6 m tall, erect or decumbent and branching at the base but not rooting. Stems green, 4-angled, not ancipitous; internodes 2 (lower )-50 (upper) mm long, lengthening markedly upwards and then exceeding leaves. Leaves sessile, spreading from base (lower) to erect (upper), not tetrastichous, persistent; lamina 10-30 x 1-8 mm, linear to narrowly or relatively broader oblong or (lower) oblanceolate, plane or recurved, not cucullate, midrib prominent and smooth or sometimes scabrid beneath, concolorous, densely glaucous, subcoriaceous; apex obtuse or rounded to acute, margin entire or usually scabrid- denticulate, base cuneate to parallel-sided, not sheathing, free; basal veins (5)3-1, without or with 1-3 pairs of ascending midrib branches, tertiary reticulation not visible; laminar glands dense, punctiform or slightly elongate, not prominent. Inflorescence 1-22-flowered, terminal, branching usually monochasial above first (dichasial) node or wholly monochasial, very rarely with 1-2 flowering branches from node below; pedicels 2-6 mm long, not or scarcely incrassate; bracts linear-lanceolate occasionally with margin scabrid-denticulate. Flowers (12)15-20 mm in diam., stellate. Sepals 5-7 x 1.5-2 mm, subequal, imbricate, oblong-elliptic to lanceolate, acute, occasionally scabrid; veins 5, unbranched or 3-branched, becoming prominent. Petals palish yellow to golden- or orange-yellow, tinged or veined red outside, 8-10 x 4-5 mm, c. 1.5 x sepals, oblanceolate; apiculus acute; glands interrupted, distally absent. Stamens c. 30-40, longest 4-5 mm long, c. 0.5 x petals. Ovary c. 2 x 1 mm, narrowly ovoid-conic; styles 3(4), (2-)2.5-4 mm, long, (1)1.3-2 x ovary; stigmas broadly capitate. Capsule 6-8.5 x (2.5)3-4 mm, narrowly ovoid-conic to narrowly ovoid, exceeding sepals, without glandular vesicles. Seeds 0.6-0.8 mm long; testa finely linear-scalariform.
