DIAGNOSTIC DESCRIPTION
Perennial or annual (?) herb, 0 07-0.65 m tall, erect or decumbent at the base, unbranched or with branches below inflorescence and/or near base or more rarely in between, erect or ascending, not rooting. Stems green to orange- brown, persistently 4-angled, ancipitous when young, cortex exfoliating in strips; internodes 2-35 mm long, the upper longer than leaves. Leaves sessile, erect to spreading, lower ones eventually deciduous; lamina 8-27 x 0.8-6 mm, narrowly lanceolate to narrowly elliptic-oblong or linear, margin plane or rarely (only due to drying) recurved, not cucullate, midrib slightly prominent beneath, paler beneath, subglaucous, thickly to thinly chartaceous; apex acute or rarely (lower leaves) subacute to obtuse, margin entire, base rounded-amplexicaul to narrowly cuneate, not decurrent or sheathing, rarely forming shallow V, free (the pair usually separated by apical boss of stem-line); basal veins 1-3 (or very rarely up to 7), with 1-4 pairs of ascending midrib branches, tertiary reticulation not or scarcely visible; laminar glands dense, not prominent, sometimes (in Costa Rica) coalescing to form streaks or lines. Inflorescence 3-32- flowered, terminal, branching dichasial/monochasial, often with paired flowering branches from up to 5 nodes below, the whole laxly corymbiform to ellipsoid or narrowly cylindric; primary pedicels 1.5-6 mm long; bracts and bracteoles oblong-linear to linear-subulate. Flowers 6-10 mm in diam., stellate; buds narrowly ovoid-elliptic, acute. Sepals 3-5(-5.5) x 0.7-1(-1.8) mm, subequal to equal, not or scarcely imbricate, narrowly lanceolate to linear-oblong, acute; veins 3-5, unbranched, only midrib sometimes slightly prominent; glands linear, distally punctiform. Petals bright yellow to orange-yellow, tinged red in bud, 4.5-5(-7) x l.2-l.7(-2.l) mm, 1.2-1.3 x sepals, oblong-oblanceolate to narrowly oblong; apiculus obsolete; glands linear, distally striiform to punctiform. Stamens 16-22, irregular, longest 2.5-3.5 mm long, 0.6-0.7 x petals. Ovary 1.3-1-6 x 0.6-1 mm, narrowly ovoid-ellipsoid; styles 3 (or rarely 4), l-l.5(-2) mm long, 0.75-1.2 x ovary, ascending; stigmas broadly capitate. Capsule 4.8-7 x 1.8-3 mm, narrowly ovoid-cylindric to narrowly cylindric, 1.4-1.6 x sepals. Seeds 0.5-0.6 mm long; testa finely linear- reticulate.
